New Regional Initiatives in Cardiovascular R&D
Companies relocating to Northeast Ohio can take advantage of access to the following new regional initiatives in the cardiovascular cluster:
The Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center
The Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center (GCIC) is a $250 million cardiovascular research and product development consortium made possible through a $60 million grant from the State of Ohio's Third Frontier Project. Founded in 2007, GCIC is the first Wright Mega-Center of Innovation under this program. GCIC is focused on the formation, attraction, expansion and retention of cardiovascular companies to create jobs and facilitate economic development in the State of Ohio.
GCIC is led by the Cleveland Clinic and comprised of the following five leading Ohio institutions: Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University, The University of Cincinnati, The University of Toledo and University Hospitals of Cleveland. These academic healthcare facilities contribute outstanding cardiovascular research excellence and clinical capabilities to GCIC to promote the commercialization of new products and the creation of new companies in the State of Ohio.
Atrial Fibrillation Innovation Center
The Atrial Fibrillation Innovation Center (AFIC), another Ohio Third Frontier-funded Wright Center of Innovation, pursues a multidisciplinary assault on atrial fibrillation through a distinguished team of accomplished laboratory and clinical researchers at Ohio’s leading academic research institutions. In collaboration with corporate partners, AFIC is making significant progress in developing new diagnostic and therapeutic options for the management of atrial fibrillation. AFIC is now operating under the GCIC umbrella, providing GCIC companies with access to AFIC’s outstanding research capabilities and state-of-the-art preclinical facility.
Center for Research Excellence in Molecular Cardiovascular Innovation
Cleveland State University recently received a $900,000 grant from the Ohio Research Scholars program to develop plans for a research center on molecular cardiovascular innovation aligned with the Cleveland Clinic Research Institute and the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center.
